About this listing

Character Holiday cottage in the forest of dean,
dog friendly with log burner and private hot tub

Enclosed garden at 24 at St John's Holiday Cottage
External View 24 at St John's Holiday Cottage

A holiday cottage with genuine soul, 24 at St John’s is a beautifully restored miner’s cottage in the heart of the Forest of Dean, where woodland walks begin at the front door and the hot tub is already warm when you arrive.

Slow mornings with coffee in the garden. Evenings by the log burner with a glass of something. Late nights soaking under the stars in your own private hot tub. This is a place that invites you to properly switch off.

Sleeping 6, with cosy spaces to gather and room to breathe, it’s well suited to families, groups of friends, and dog owners looking for a relaxed countryside escape. Up to 2 dogs are warmly welcomed, at no extra charge.

The bedrooms

Master Bedroom at 24 at St John's Holiday Cottage

After a day of exploring, everyone deserves a proper good night’s sleep. The three bedrooms at 24 at St John’s are designed to ensure that happens.

Bedroom One is a generous king-size bed dressed in soft linens, a smart TV for slow mornings or a quiet evening and space for a travel cot if you’re bringing a little one along. Calm, quiet, and just right for proper unwinding.

Bedroom Two is a flexible favourite. Holidaying with Mum and Dad? We’ll make it up as a king. Bringing friends or older kids? We can switch it to twin beds instead. Just let us know when you book, and we’ll sort it before you arrive.

Bedroom Three is where the younger guests tend to get very excited. A standard double bed on the bottom means an adult can sleep comfortably too, while the single bunk above is perfect for small children who love the idea of sleeping up high.

All three rooms are finished with soft linens, calming colours and those small touches that make a place feel genuinely welcoming rather than just tidy. Together they sleep up to 6 guests, with enough flexibility to work for most family or group combinations.

Fully EQuipped Kitchen and Dining Space

Kitchen at 24 at St. John's holiday cottage
Peaceful Retreat - spacious and comfortable dining area at 24 at St. John's

The dining area sits in the oldest part of the cottage, and you can feel it. Stone, character and a proper sense of place. It’s the kind of space that naturally draws people together, whether that’s a relaxed breakfast before heading out into the forest, a long evening meal with good food and good company, or just a glass of wine while everyone winds down.

Before you sit down to eat, take a moment to look at the fireplace. The original hearth is home to a bespoke mural by local artist Sian, a hand-crafted piece that brings a little creativity and a lot of Forest of Dean spirit right into the heart of the cottage.

In the kitchen, the mood shifts to bright and practical. Two skylights provide natural light throughout the day, and underfloor heating keeps the floor warm even in the depths of winter. It’s fully equipped for self-catering, so whether you’re throwing together a quick breakfast before a woodland walk or cooking a proper dinner for the group, you’ll find everything you need.

Together, the two spaces work beautifully. The rustic charm of the original cottage meets the ease of a modern kitchen, making it a genuinely comfortable place to cook, eat and linger.

Snug and Sun Room

Peaceful Retreat - Cosy Snug at 24 at St. John's
Sun room at 24 at St John's Holiday Cottage

At the heart of the original cottage sits the snug, and it earns its name. Sink into a reclining chair, get the log burner going and put something good on the Smart TV. This is the room that tends to claim people on the first evening and doesn’t let them go. Cosy, warm and exactly what a proper countryside escape should feel like.

Through the glass doors is the sunroom, and the change of mood is immediate. Two large windows and French doors opening onto the garden fill the space with natural light, making it feel bright and open. There’s additional seating, another Smart TV, and a coffee table that opens up to reveal a stash of games and puzzles. Ideal for a family games evening, a rainy afternoon, or just a quieter spot to sit and look out over the garden.

The glass doors between the two rooms give you a choice. Open them up, and you have a generous living space that works brilliantly for larger groups gathering together. Close them when you want a bit of separation, perhaps the kids watching a film in the sunroom while the adults relax in the Snug.

It’s a flexible, thoughtful setup space that gives everyone room to relax at their own pace.

Workspace at 24 at St John's Holiday Cottage

The Breakfast Bar

The breakfast bar is one of those spots that earns its place in a few different ways. Pull up a stool to watch the chef at work, grab a quick breakfast before heading out for the day, or just sit with a coffee and ease into the morning slowly.

And if you absolutely have to check in with the office, it works for that too. Comfortable seating, USB charging points and fast Wi-Fi make it a perfectly decent little workspace when life doesn’t fully switch off. Send the emails, plan the day’s adventures, then close the laptop and get back to the important stuff.

The Garden

BBQ at 24 at St Johns Holiday Cottage
Hot Tub at 24 at St Johns holiday cottage

The private hot tub

Step outside and the cottage keeps on giving.

The raised patio is a genuinely lovely spot, whether that’s a slow morning coffee watching the garden wake up, a lazy afternoon in the sun with nowhere particular to be, or evening drinks as the forest settles down for the night. The whole garden is enclosed, so children can play freely on the lawn and dogs can potter about and let off steam without you having to worry.

When the mood takes you, fire up the coal BBQ. There’s something about cooking outside that makes food taste better, and a summer evening in a Forest of Dean garden with good company is hard to beat.

And then there’s the hot tub. Tucked into the garden and entirely private, it’s heated and ready for you when you arrive, so there’s no waiting around. It’s powered by an air source heat pump and run partially on solar energy with battery backup, so you can enjoy a long soak knowing it’s a more considered choice for the environment too. After a long day of woodland walks, scrambling with the kids or just exploring everything the forest has to offer, sliding into a warm hot tub as the stars come out is a very good way to end the day. It’s the kind of thing guests tend to mention first when they tell friends about their stay.

Together the lawn, patio and hot tub make the outside space feel like a natural part of the cottage rather than an afterthought. When the weather is on your side, you’ll be out here more than you expect.

out and about in the forest of dean (Cannop Ponds)

September Getaway - visit Cannop Ponds

The Forest of Dean is one of England’s last ancient royal forests, and once you’re in it, you’ll understand why people keep coming back. Vast woodland, dramatic viewpoints, wildlife around every corner and enough to keep families, adventure seekers and those who just want a long walk and a bit of peace thoroughly happy for days.

Within a short drive of the cottage you’ll find some of the forest’s most loved spots. Puzzlewood is a firm favourite with families and younger explorers. The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail winds quietly through the trees and rewards those who take their time. And the view from Symonds Yat Rock is the kind that stops you in your tracks.

For those who like a bit more action, there’s canoeing and kayaking on the River Wye, the Go Ape treetop adventure course, and heritage steam railways threading through the forest. Wildlife lovers should keep an eye out too. Deer, wild boar and birds of prey are all here, and guided wildlife safaris offer a wonderful way to explore the quieter corners of the forest.

Most of the main attractions are between 5 and 30 minutes away by car, which means you can pack a proper day out and still be back at the cottage in good time to light the log burner and get the hot tub going.

For a full guide to what’s on and where to go, head to our Local Attractions page and our Blogs, where you’ll find an interactive map and plenty of ideas to help you plan your time in the forest.

Dog-Friendly Stays

Good news if you’re travelling with a four-legged friends. Up to two dogs are warmly welcomed at 24 at St John’s, completely free of charge, and we’ve put a bit of thought into making the stay comfortable for them as well as for you.

When you arrive you’ll find a little welcome set up waiting for your dogs. Comfortable dog blankets, food and water bowls, poo bags, a handmade tug toy and an “I’m on holiday” dog tag with contact details, just in case they go on an adventure of their own. The garden is fully enclosed with a bolt-lock on the inside of the gate, so they can run about safely. Scenic walks start straight from the front door, too. They’re going to love it here.

We ask a couple of things in return. Please keep dogs off the beds unless they’re using one of the provided blankets, and ensure they’re settled before leaving them alone for short periods.

Travelling with a dog can sometimes feel like hard work. We’ve tried to ensure that from the moment you arrive, it really isn’t.
